SAE Alumni – Kyle Koekemoer

Head of Audio at Pressure Cooker Studios

1. Please describe your journey to becoming Head of Audio at Pressure Cooker Studios.

Serving as the Head of Audio at Pressure Cooker Studios for nearly two years represents a significant milestone in my career. However, this journey began with humble beginnings as an intern and Junior Engineer at TheWorkRoom. Along the way, I’ve been fortunate to benefit from the guidance of numerous mentors who have played pivotal roles in shaping my professional development. Their insights and mentorship have been instrumental in refining my skills and instilling confidence in my abilities as an Audio Post Engineer.

2. Could you share some of the key challenges and highlights you have encountered throughout your career?

Building trust with clients and earning recognition for my work required persistent effort in cultivating relationships and showcasing the unique value I bring through my sound design. Over time, I’ve developed a distinct sonic voice that resonates with clients, enabling me to elevate their projects and provide them with memorable experiences.

Notable highlights include my involvement in projects like “Heart of the Hunter”, which became the first African film to top Netflix’s international charts for two consecutive weeks, and “Spinners”, the inaugural African series to be showcased at Cannes, garnering both local and international acclaim. Additionally, my early career experiences, including assisting on ADR sessions for high-profile films, equipped me with invaluable people skills and accelerated my professional growth.

3. What advice can you share with current or prospective students?

Beginning your journey in the industry as early as possible is paramount. Beyond academic requirements, engage with industry projects and collaborate with fellow SAE departments. Initiatives like the 48 Film Project offer invaluable opportunities to immerse yourself in real-world scenarios and hone your craft. Seek guidance from experienced mentors and leverage resources available at SAE to explore internships and shadowing opportunities. By proactively building relationships and accumulating hands-on experience, you’ll lay a solid foundation for success upon graduation.
